Five Tools for Writing Timed Essays

Writing a college-level essay under timed and secure conditions, one does not have access to tools such as books, computers, and experts that one ordinarily uses when writing an academic essay. So, one must develop skills in the use of a set of specific intellectual tools. These skills can only come from practice; however, before practice one must learn to use the tools. And since the tools for writing are intellectual tools, the toolbox is memory. As the Greek myths show Mnemosyne - the goddess of memory - is the mother of the Muses - the guiding spirits of the arts and the sciences.

Five tools are necessary to excel in writing a college-level essay: choosing words, constructing sentences, organizing paragraphs, developing essay form, and applying theories.
