Spiritual Origin Of Vedas

by J. Sridhar

In the beginning, there was only Brahman, the one without a second. From this Brahman was born SwayamBhu VishwaKarma who created the universe. (SwayamBhu means "self-born", VishwaKarma means "architect of the universe"). VishwaKarma had five faces; from each face, a brahma was born; these were Manu (not Manu of ManuSmriti), Maya, Twastha, Shilpi, and Vishwajna.

Each of these Brahmas was the architect of one Veda. Thus there are five vedas: Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharva, and Pranava vedas.

As the female counterpart of these five Brahmas, five female aspects (Shaktis) were born. These were Adi Shakti, Para Shakti, Ichcha Shakti, Jnana Shakti, and Buddhi Shakti.

From each of these Brahmas were born five Bhootas (or elements). These were Prithvi, Apas, Vayu, Agni, and Akasha.

For a long time, the vedas were taught only by word-of-mouth. That is, it was passed on by a guru to his sishyas (disciples) who in turn passed it on to thier sishyas.

Vyasa was a sishya of one of these Pancha Brahmas. He learnt the Vedas, Shastras, and Puranas from him. At the end of Dwapara Yuga (Death of Krishna), Vyasa put these down in written form with modifications of his own. He then prayed to his guru, and when the guru promised to give him what he wanted, Vyasa asked that what he has written down as Vedas be followed by people. His guru then realized what Vyasa had done, and since he was bound by his word to Vyasa, granted that "Whatever you have written will be followed in the coming Kali Yuga for 5000 years". Thus, Vedas in the current form have been written by Vyasa, and will be followed till the end of Kali Yuga.

What were the distortions introduced by Vyasa in the Vedas?

First of all, Vyasa reduced Pancha Murtis (Five Lords of the Universe) to Thri Murti (Three Lords: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva).

Next, he reduced Pancha Vedas to Chatur Vedas (Four Vedas: Rig, Sama, Atharva, Yajur).

Finally, he had edited all the texts to give superiority to Vipra Brahmans (today's brahmins). Before his time, the descendants of the Pancha Brahmas, called Vishwa-Karmas, were doing what are supposed to be done by brahmins today (pooja in temples, teaching, etc). In effect, Vyasa obtained a 5000 year lease for Vipra Brahmins. These Vipra Brahmins, in turn, introduced massive distortions into the varna system. Just as thier ancestor had done before them, the Vipras went about altering every text in sight to give superiority for themselves. Whereas Veda Adhyayana (Veda reading) was open to everybody regardless of birth, the vipras, out of selfishness, kept everybody out.

Vishwa-Karmas, the descendants of the Pancha Brahmas, were involved in the "architecture of the world". Thier work was classified as follows:

Manunaam loha karmani
mayanaam daru karmani
twasthanaam karuka karmani
shilakarantu shilpabihi
vishwajna swarna karma cha
pancha brahma mayam jagat.

Descendants of Manu -> Iron
Descendants of Maya -> Wood
Descendants of Twastha -> Copper, Bronze
Descendants of Shilpi -> stone
Descendants of Vishwajna -> gold

Thier tools depend on the yuga, as described below.
krutha yuge manashuddhi
tretaya yugam drushti rupakam
dwapare mantra saamarthyam
kali yuge kara sadhanaha.

In Krutha yuga -> from purity of mind
In Tretha yuga -> from sight
In Dwapara yuga -> from mantras
In Kali yuga -> using hands

However, this age of Kali is coming to an end. Vipras are gradually losing thier hold over the people. They have given up Veda Adhyayana, and have taken up Para Vidya (means all other professions, including western education). At the arrival of Kalki, they will be so poor and powerless as to not have enough to eat and wear. This process is evident in India, where there is an uprising against the upper-castes, mainly vipras. (incidentally, this upper-caste lower-caste business cropped up in kali yuga under the stewardship of vipra brahmins; before this, all castes were equally respected to thier service to the people).

In addition, just before the arrival of kalki, Vipras will lose control of Sringeri Mutt, and Vishwa-Karmas will get control of it. Also, Vishwa-Karmas will be restored to thier past glory.

Meanwhile, the original vedas have been written and hidden under a Tamarind tree in Kandi Mallaya Palli in Andhra Pradesh. Kalki will get it out for the benefit of the people.
